This Needs Real Public Consultation

A massive industrial rezoning is proposed in South Surrey. It’s in the Hazelmere Valley covering a large part of the Little Campbell River Watershed. The proposed industrial lands are also on top of the Brookswood Aquifer which supplies drinking water to thousands of people.

The revival of the proposal was unexpected because it had been rejected previously a few years before and Mayor McCallum was opposed to it during his 2018 election campaign.

The public consultation process was clearly inadequate. It was an afternoon session of council. Many people could not attend to speak. They wrote in or emailed instead.

Approximately 80% of respondents were opposed and for some unknown reason council approved it by a narrow margin with the Safe Surrey Coalition voting block providing the votes.

There is no question that Greater Vancouver needs more industrial land, but there is also no question that developing in or near sensitive ecological areas like the Little Campbell River needs to be considered carefully.

We are asking that this rezoning be put on hold until meaningful engagement can take place. The January 28th, 2022 vote at Metro Vancouver is the last opportunity to bring sanity to this process.

Councillor Linda Annis has voted for this development at Metro Vancouver. She is one of the people who has to be convinced to change her vote.

We are asking Metro Vancouver voters to put a pause the South Campbell rezoning in Surrey. The people of Surrey should be heard. Doug McCallum may be mayor, but he does not reflect the views of the residents. Neither does his party. They seem to operate in their own universe.

A development like this should be an election issue.
